(EDMOND/OK) - (October 4, 1999) - Infomedia, Inc. announced today that the company has reached an agreement to offer the < href="http://www.worldvillage.com/villagelink/">POWERworx™ Online filtered Internet service to their members through WorldVillage, one of the Web’s most popular family-oriented Web sites.
The Internet option, called POWERblock™, provides parents with a built-in tool to protect their children from objectionable Internet content.
“POWERblock will not only block access to sites that have objectionable content, but will also block the display of search results on words that are considered vulgar, profane, sexual, drug-related, obscene or hateful,” said Joel Comm, President of Infomedia. “If a search is attempted on a registered search engine for a restricted word, POWERblock will display a block page instead of displaying search hits, which may contain sexual, rude and/or hateful references. This is revolutionary and unique for server-side search engines which often block access to objectionable sites, but which allow search “hits” to be displayed along with references to explicit details, which may be offensive.”
The POWERblock™ filter is updated daily and the blocking is accomplished not only by specific Internet addresses, but also by words and word combinations. A super fast computer system actually visits every site on the Net each day -- at the rate of over 2.7 million sites per hour. It is estimated that an average of 300 bona fide porn sites are identified each day -- and the system spots 96-99% of them. When a new site is established, the software spots it within hours.
WorldVillage will offer the ISP through their web site, as well as Family First, their e-mail newsletter which reaches over 50,000 members each week.
